Join us 4th Friday (BLACK FRIDAY!), November 24th, for new art shows and Holiday shopping starting at 12 pm!

Art Works has a new notion of the holidays. Think calm, peaceful, comfortable and relaxing. Beginning on Black Friday, when the rest of the city is hurriedly looking for deals and parking spaces, we are kicking off Art Works’ Holiday Hygge. Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish word and custom. It’s about making your environment warm, comfortable and enjoying the small, good things in life with good people.

With that in mind, we’ve set up a Holiday Hygge Shop with handmade items that will have you feeling cozy, joyful and peaceful.

A New Black Friday!

We’ve carefully selected 10 special artisans for our Holiday Hygge Market in the main gallery. They will showcase their handmade gifts on November 24th (BLACK FRIDAY) from 12 noon – 5 pm. Enjoy festive holiday refreshments, wine tastings from Valley Road Vineyards, and for the children, they can make holiday gifts and participate in a Holiday Hygee Scavenger Hunt.

Free parking!

Holiday Cheer, Wednesdays in December!

Set aside Wednesday evenings in December for more Holiday Hygee experiences as Art Works. Join us for hot cups of cocoa, cider, bon-fires, poetry, a movie, yoga and conversation. Each Wednesday evening will have a different theme and all you need to do is drop by and enjoy the peace, comfort and good company. Wednesday Holiday Hygee’s are December 6, 13, 20 from 5 pm – 8 pm. Oh, and it’s all free, including parking.

New Exhibits Include:

Recent Works by Gail Nichols

Gail Nichols, an active member of the Richmond art community for many years is now immersed in visual and performing arts in King William County and West Point, Virginia. This exhibit of mixed media is highly colorful and masterfully rendered. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery.

Make Some Quiet by Donna Campbell Allen

In the work of teaching artists, for Donna Campbell Allen there is a quest for calm and quiet, a striving to be still in the midst of chaos: Stillness calms the soul. Strength in reverberating beats, Confidence in repetitive notes, Patience in waiting, Beauty in being, Healing in resting, Gratefulness in usefulness, Joy in loveliness, Poise in contemplation. The solidarity of these reflective qualities can bring peace. This exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery.

Chiaroscuro by Sue Maida

Chiaroscuro was a painting technique developed during the Renaissance that used strong tonal contrasts to define the solid form. In photography, the term has evolved to mean bold contrasts between the light and dark areas in the image. To my eye black and white photography holds the most elemental, or organic, expression of a form, and applying the chiaroscuro principle is a way to elevate the mood and elicit emotion. These are images of the mundane that, I hope, have been rendered as "something more" through the manipulation of light and shadow.

Artism: The world through the eyes of Autism
by Reid Hall

Reid Hall is a remarkable young man with autism who has found his voice in photography. Growing up he never really understood how differently he saw the world. He has a very unique perspective that helps us all experience Reid's world of autism. The photos he has chosen to show us how he sees things. He now understands that he sees things differently and is OK with that. Being different isn't a bad thing. It's what makes you special. He hopes you enjoy his art show. The exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery, East.
