Feminist Series by Julie Dzikiewicz Jane Sandelin Gallery.

When Julie rented a studio in the Workhouse Arts Center in northern Virginia, she discovered history - a connection with the people imprisoned in this a former prison where suffragist Lucy Burns lead a hunger strike. Julie learned that Burns lived through the “Night Of Terror”, an evening when the newly incarcerated Suffragists were stripped, forced into dirty clothing, and tossed into iron beds. Julie found herself putting brush to canvas in the same place that Suffragists refused to put fork to mouth. Julie will exhibit a series of  paintings honoring the Suffragists, depicting everything from prison guards fighting the hunger strikes by cooking fragrant hams to how the women risked syphilis in the showers in jail. In her encaustic paintings, layering wax like the accumulation of history, she reminds women of the human condition, and of their potential to change the world though determination, hard work, and learning from the past. This exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery.

Join the Artist for a Lecture on her work 1/17/16 at 4:30 pm at Art Works.

Architectural Abstractions by Perry Matthews

I became intrigued by urban architecture while driving through downtown Richmond on a sunny Sunday in winter. The angles, shapes, and reflections fascinated me and offered myriad possibilities to transform reality into art. Please enjoy these architectural translations emanating as far away as Singapore and as close as a few blocks up the street. This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery, West.

Multi-media artist, Rob Vance, has shown his artwork at the Peninsula Fine Arts Gallery (Newport News VA), the D'art Center (Norfolk VA), the Cade Center for Fine Arts (Arnold MD) and many galleries across the US. He is also an award-winning graphic designer who has donated his design time to help such charities as Avalon, a center for women and children (Williamsburg VA) and the Hope House Foundation (Norfolk VA). This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery, East.

LAYERS OF LIFE by Karol Hilker

"Layers of Life is a series of paintings on canvas constructed with a mixture of wire, clay, ribbons and beads. The images and materials are used to show the pull that life has on us. The layers and materials also represent the parts of our lives that don’t touch us yet are important. The struggles and pleasure we all experience can be invisible but as you view these paintings they are brought to life." Corner Gallery
