GENESIS by Alexandra Chiou Jane Sandelin Gallery. Alex Chiou is a Richmond native, and a May 2011 graduate from the University of Virginia where she double majored in business and studio art. In emerging artist Alex Chiou's first solo exhibition, she aims to explore the complex parallels between geography, the natural world, and the human body. She first became interested in portraying the landscape in its untouched, primal state during her travels in Southeast Asia. Likewise, she has always been interested in organic forms, and desired to understand the common threads of life from a philosophical and scientific perspective. She marries these themes in her work by utilizing forms, shapes and colors synonymous with nature, anatomy, and the cosmos, symbolizing the common origin of all life forms. Ultimately, Alex's paintings reflect her endeavor to portray, explore and celebrate the inception of life as we know it.
SAVE A.R.T. in RVA You’ve heard of A.R.T. (Artistic Realization Technologies) – a program that enables severely, physically challenged individuals to create art and express their point of views. Formerly funded by Easter Seals UCP, A.R.T. in RVA is seeking their own non-profit status and will be putting on a full-blown exhibition and fundraiser July 26th, at Art Works. But this month you will be getting a preview and have the opportunity to meet some of the artists and donate toward keeping this program alive and flourishing in Richmond. The exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery East and will feature art made by the artists of A.R.T. RVA.
BLANTON SEWARD RECENT WORKS Seward is an accomplished painter and will be displaying this month in the Centre Gallery.
GOING BACK: THE CURIOUS CHILD by Eve Lexima Skylight Gallery. Eve Lexima: Founder of Ann Ale' Gallery; a wonderful photographer, her work is passionate and intimately expressive. THE ROAMING SPIRIT by Dorothy Ellis "Abstract art lacks easy access to recognizable objects. It is non-figurative and does not rely on subject matter for its being. It requires a sense of composition, volume, line, color and interval dynamics of the viewer. The very essence of art, stripped of allusions, is based on my experiences in the landscape. Abstract art is full of color, light, and lyrical movements that demand our most abstract thinking.
The paintings produced are enjoyed, but the viewers must come with their own dialogue. Collectors of abstract art are a confident lot with personal interpretations. I hope my paintings and prints speak to the viewers heart and demand one’s abstract thinking."
The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery.
