ABOUT FACE: AT EASE WITH PIXELS AND PAINTING - Anne B. Burnley. The exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery, West:

"Authenticity is the foundation for my art. Digital and emulsion transfer processes, collage techniques, and painting are evident in this suite of images derived from my photographs of soldiers training for war. As a soldier serving in the Virginia Army National Guard as Sergeant First Class, Public Affairs, Maneuver Training Center, Fort Pickett, I document the rigors of intense battle focused missions.

I observe, then immerse myself in various field training exercises. With camera in hand, I stalk subjects, blend into action, and maneuver around very focused service members. I look for sequential movements, intensity of facial expressions, hands engaged in operating equipment, and weapons firing.

In the studio, I transition from military photojournalist to artist. I consciously consider drill and ceremony, and military organization while honing concepts for mixed media collages. Textures, surfaces, and emulsion transfer imagery enable me to embrace, synthesize and visualize the chaos, confusion, motion, and intensity of battle focused training onto receiving media. I employ asymmetric composition and repetitive images as devices to create a sense of movement and stop-action effects. My intent is to capture the essence and intensity of each military mission and to generate images that sparkle with energy."
