TRACE MONOTYPES, EXPRESSIVE HANDS by Michael Gettings This exhibit is only one of many mediums explored by Gettings. To create the monotypes, he uses inks, graphite and pastels. The image if the fist came about while doing a study for a painting and he saw te work was a form of portraiture. Each fist is as individual as the face, with unique characteristics and features. After experimenting with images he decided to use only female fists because the human fist symbolizes power, strength and is often seen as male. The juxtaposition of the typical male image with the actual female physique is part of the theme.
