Artist Statement :
Whitley calls his art "therapy". It helps him relax. Whitley has had 3 brushes with death: The Vietnam War, a heart attack, and a brain aneurysm. "If I'm feeling good, I can finish one piece of artwork in less than six hours, but some have taken two or more days, sometimes even longer than that to complete," Whitley says.
Whitley arranges pieces of bark on a cardboard or luan, then adds other items such as leaves, pressed flowers, moss, pebbles, cotton, etc. Then to add color he uses seasonings such as red pepper, sage, etc.
The artist does not start out with a plan; he simply does what he feels. No two pieces are alike. He involves the audience with one question: "What do you see in this picture?"
With Whitley working with Natures' gifts, its only natural he named his artwork collection: Nature's Palette: Unique Art Rooted in Nature. The collection has been features in the WASHINGTON ESTUARIUM, GOOSE CREEK STATE PARK, THE RECREATION AND COMMUNITY GALLERY OF ART in New Jersey, THE EFFIE RAYE ARTS SOCIETY of Belhaven, NC, and a number of showings in Virginia. Whitley also won first and third places in the COLLARD GREEN FESTIVAL in Ayden, NC in 2009.
