Artist Statement :

James Hunt is an artist and activist from Virginia. Educated as a painter in New York City and Paris, James’s last home in Oakland, California and work with agricultural technology led him to create a series of public sculptures dedicated to furthering ecological awareness, and injecting urban horticulture into day-to-day experiences. He continues this work in Richmond with a project subtitled, “Florae” which features the world’s smallest vertical farm - available for tours in Studio 214 - which, in part with the sculptures he creates, provides a model and metaphor to help guide cultural awareness towards the novelty and necessity of biological life, and in particular plants. James also creates large format acrylic paintings, often expressing the dynamism of human interaction, aggregated, featuring simplified human characters that evoke Keith Haring but dance to a tune all their own. This interest in human interaction, and the shaping of consciousness through vibes jives with Hunt’s intended function in his work across all mediums.
