Artist Statement :
In earlier lives, Carolyn has experienced worlds of secretary, of puppeteer, a storyteller, and a college teacher of children’s literature and language arts. Her work with clay began in the mid-eighties; she recognizes specific mentors along the way. At the University of Georgia, she worked with Ron Myers. At Longwood University, she studied with Randy Edmonson, and in Richmond she continues to learn and grow with Jonnie Kinney. Carolyn’s work has moved from small figurative pieces to her current examination of bas relief in clay. Her inspirations have come from well-known painters, sculptors, and photographs of varied artists. She believes that clay belongs not only on the table and on the pedestal but also on the walls for the visual experience. Now residing in Richmond, she can be reached either at home (935-8919) or on her cell (402-4038).
My work tells stories. At times, only my voice conveys the story. Other times, poetry captures the images. As time has passed, I find my hands seeking more tactile experiences, working with clay, fiber, and paper. This is my journey: to make sense of who I am, to unravel the strands of life that weave together conflict, challenge, possibility and hope. Through the regular restringing of my violin I find harmony.
